Sleeves rolled up, pinnies on, preheat your ovens, grease those baking trays and stand by your island units people, I have a date for your diaries. The 18th
May is World Baking Day!
Last year I attempted a savoury Pinwheel Tarte and a Marbled Black Sesame Japanese Baked Cheesecake. Both
were equally delicious even though they didn't quite go according to plan.
World Baking Day is an opportunity
to try my hand at something that I wouldn't normally dare attempt. I have several options that I am keeping under wraps until the big day, some of which are very
simple and some of which could be an absolute recipe for disaster but that’s all
part of the fun.
So, I would like to encourage
all those that have a desire to get coated in
flour and a secret penchant to fling batter around the kitchen to join in. Whether you bake for your family, friends or
colleagues is totally up to you.

Savoury or Sweet, Muffins or Pies, Gateaux or Tarts, Low Fat or Gluten Free, Family Favourites or Granny’s Secret Recipe, you decide.
You can even up the ante and try both a sweet and
savoury dish, so long as one element of your dish is
baked.
I will be revealing my attempts on the 18th May. I hope you can pop along and let us know if you are going to take part too, so that we can all visit your blog to see what wonderful yumminess you have created.
An extra special sticky bun goes to the clever clogs that correctly guesses what I'm baking!
Yummy selection there! Good luck with your baking on the day! Unlikely to do any baking here but wouldn't mind doing lots of eating on the day...
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to be baking but not doing too much eating. The downside of baking is that there's all that temptation just sitting there waiting to attach itself to my hips:)
DeleteAll of these look better than anything I could do myself but I will give it a try!
ReplyDeletexo,
Phyllis
I bet you are a wiz in the kitchen. Look forward to seeing what you create.
Deletefor me baking is a weekly occurrence…any excuse to fire up the oven and mix up delicious messes…thank goodness the family eats most of it before I can or I would be in big trouble!
ReplyDeletesounds like a fun idea to have a world baking day…an old art, rediscovered
I rarely bake these days, when I do I also make a fine mess but I'm quite good at clearing as I go.
DeleteI will join you for sure on World Baking Day! I'm looking forward to what you will bake? All the best Mr P! Have fun baking.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you're going to create Pamela.
DeleteI know, I know, it's going to be iced cookies in the shape of shoes and handbags, right?!
Bun fight at yours. May 18th. Got it.
ReplyDeleteDid you just thrown down an oven mitt right there!
DeleteHappy baking Mr Paul - I suspect that you are a wizard in the kitchen - my efforts will be nil, I am absent next weekend, but look forward to seeing what little dough balls you present - may be that is what you will make - doughnuts?
ReplyDeleteOoooh, you might be actually be quite close Rosemary. You might win the special sticky bun after all!
DeleteDear Paul,
ReplyDeletevery good to know and thank you for telling in advance. I'll make a note in my calendar. You know that I translated "LEON. Baking & Puddings" by Claire Ptak and Henry Dimbleby for a big German publisher - and as I tried the recipes before translating, I am sure I'll find something nice to bake again.
Of course, if there is anyone who knows a thing about baking it's you Britta. I remember the book very well. Now that's what you call dedicated translation. But who ate all the puddings cover to cover?
DeleteI can't bake but I'm available to cheer you on!! And available to sample goodies :) Cannot wait to see what you are making. I'm sure it will be heavenly - xo
ReplyDeleteI am no baking expert Loi. I specialise in burnt buns, lopsided cakes and pies that you could use as doorstops but I'm happy to ship some over.
DeletePaul, I baked today for a teatime in the gazebo guest - my much appreciated Raspberry Buttermilk cake again because it's easy, quick and delicious, and as it hit 90F today I wanted out of the kitchen fast! As the gazebo ceiling fan turned and I wiped my brow, I scoffed down a slice loving each crumb, sipping Empress Grey (Fairtrade from M&S and my favorite tea), wishing it was cool again.
ReplyDeleteI think you will concoct something awesome for World Baking Day, looking beautiful and tasting divine……….I can't promise anything from my oven unless it cools down to 70F.
Hugs - Mary
Crikey Mary, you could always do a nice fried egg out on the bonnet of your car for us!
DeleteI love baking!!!! I cannot wait to see what you will be baking! I may have to join you with something chocolate.
ReplyDeleteYou, Elizabeth? Cooking with chocolate? Nah, I don't believe it:)
DeleteWhat fun Paul! Shall look forward to it!
ReplyDeleteSophia x
Cant wait to see what gorgeousness you create Sophia.
DeleteHi Paul,
ReplyDeleteYou have many hidden talents! I did not realise you are a fellow baker. I will try to join in next week. Have to go to a concert by sir Cliff with my aunt though (one of his greatest fans), so I can't make any promises. I will try and see if I can find something new and delicious to bake.......perhaps a Tarte tatin, Mississippi mud pie.....
Happy weekend!
Madelief x
Madelief, come on, you don't have to pretend you are taking your Aunt to see Cliff.
DeleteYou're in good company and we're not here to judge.
Just repeat after me..."Hello, my name is Madelief and I'm Cliff Richard's number one fan"
x :)
Dear Mr Paul, my magical friend,
ReplyDeleteLong, much too long, time no blog see. I have however been hovering in the outskirts of your magical wreath land for some time, and am delighted to step a little closer to your lopsided cakes and doorstop pies today... Or shall I perhaps await the floury fiest of the 18th...? To see your "pies de resistance", smell your sweet sensations...? Either way, I am sorry I have been so terribly absent, so silent, for so long. Life held me hostage for a while. I hope to now be able to enjoy your musings a little more regularly. I love your photographic and pen-produced poetry. Forgive a romantic old fool, but your posts are sunshine for the soul. So there, the soppy Swede is back. And is she baking? You bet.
Chocolate-scented greetings,
Helena
Well I never, the wandering Swede returns. I was beginning to think that I might need to send out a search party. So nice to have you visiting Helena, I have sorely missed your words and pictures of late and am looking forward to see what delights you will be offering up in the Swenglish household next week.
Delete"Pie de resistance", I love it!
Surely this is a site well worth seeing.
ReplyDeleteI'm not promising perfection now Jerry:)
DeleteLol--- I'd love to watch you fling flour all over your kitchen!! I can't wait to see what wonderful creations spring forth from your oven!!
ReplyDeleteVicki
I guarantee it's going to get mighty messy this weekend Vicki. xx
DeleteHands up to be taster.
ReplyDeleteNot a great baker, but my raison d'etre for running is so that I can eat cake!!!
Looks like a lot of fun.
Hope you have a lovely week,
Liz x
